Meet Ethan Banks, Interopís Infrastructure Track Chair

Ethan Banks is developing Interop's Infrastructure track to help IT pros navigate the upheavals in networking and the data center.

Ethan Banks chairs Interop’s Infrastructure track, which explores how virtualization and cloud are changing how networks and data centers are designed, built, and operated. Ethan gathers experts and practitioners to help IT pros navigate these changes, both to advance their organizations and their careers.

Ethan is a senior network architect at Carenection, a startup that connects hundreds of hospitals across the United States to deliver telehealth services. He’s also co-host of the popular Packet Pushers podcast, and a regular contributor to Network Computing.

Ethan recently sat down with TechnologyAdvice, a B2B marketing company that researches gamification, big data, PM, and more, to talk about the Packet Pushers podcast and his involvement with Interop.

Ethan started the Packet Pushers podcast with Greg Ferro in May of 2010. He and Greg weren’t finding the kind of networking discussions online that they wanted, so they decided to create their own. The podcast is intended for people who build networks and work with data centers.

As of this interview, Packet Pushers has enjoyed over 2.5 million downloads. Ethan says each show gets more than 9,000 downloads. As a day-to-day practitioner in networking and a CCIE, Ethan combines both real-world experience and a passion for technology. He lives the content that he creates, which he feels provides more value for listeners.

Ethan brings this same approach to his Infrastructure track ant Interop, providing practical content from experts in the field. This is what gives Interop such an edge, according to Ethan.

“You as a practitioner hear content from people that know this material really well and have experience they’re drawing from,” he said in a podcast interview with TechnologyAdvice. “Not only that, you get the chance to talk to the people sitting in the chairs next to you about their experiences and what they’re going through.”

As the networking industry evolves, Ethan sees a convergence of disciplines within IT, and the need for IT pros to keep expanding their skills and their knowledge. Interop is an ideal venue because it offers a wide range of content and provides the opportunity for attendees to interact with peers across a variety of technology disciplines.

“You can open up a conversation and learn from each other’s experience and share ideas,” he said. “You walk away with tools in your toolbox. You’ve got a relationship with someone you can continue beyond Interop.”
